Brand History: Young Brand, Serious Pedigree

Founded in 1990, just two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nomos began as a small startup in Glashütte — the spiritual home of German horology. Within a few years, they had launched their first models, built around manual-wind Peseux movements, and wrapped in ultra-minimal, Bauhaus-inspired cases.

 Nomos started building its own movements — and not just modules or tweaks. Full, in-house calibers with German finishing, proper Glashütte three-quarter plates, and later: swing systems (escapements) and proprietary tech.

By the 2010s, they were making real manufacture watches — priced like mid-tier Swiss, but built like small-batch independents.

  • Tangente – The brand’s icon. Wire lugs, typographic dial, manual movement. A modern classic and one of the most recognizable German watches ever made.

  • Orion – Smooth, curved case. No numerals. Pure Bauhaus dress watch energy.

  • Metro – Quirky, modern, slightly playful. Designed by industrial designer Mark Braun. Wire lugs, asymmetrical details, and dot power reserve.

  • Club – Sportiest model in the lineup. Beefier case, stronger water resistance, still minimal.

  • Ahoi – True sport/dive-capable Nomos. Screw-down crown, 200m water resistance, still wears thin and clean.

  • Ludwig – Roman numerals, curved case — a bit more classical without losing the minimalist edge.

  • Lambda / Lux – Ultra-high-end, haute horlogerie tier Nomos with gold cases and fully hand-finished in-house movements. Rare, niche, and stunning.

Movements range from early Alpha manual calibers to modern DUW autos, including:

  • DUW 3001 – Ultra-thin automatic

  • DUW 6101 – Date-equipped, slim, and beautifully finished

  • DUW 1001 – Found in Lambda — Geneva stripes, swan-neck regulator, and serious collector-level finishing

Every movement is made in-house in Glashütte, and many include German-style details like blued screws, ribbing, and gold chatons.

They make their own movements. They design everything in-house. Their finishing is better than a lot of $8K Swiss brands. And their watches wear like a dream.
